tasting the sky on your tongue.

October 26, 2012

I love snow.

I love how the littles first thoughts are to catch some on their tongues.

I love the way fat flakes fall.

I love how everything feels cozy and wonderful and cheery when you're inside and it's snowing.

And I love that in Minnesota, we have early snow days every year.

While everyone is still singing autumn's praises, sipping pumpkin spice lattes, and having bonfires or harvest parties...we've slipped into the beginning of winter, clutching our peppermint mochas and pulling on scarves and mittens. And I love it. Maybe it comes from being Minnesotan, but I've always loved winter. The air so clear, it crackles when you breath it, the contrast of colors and how everything tastes sweeter and smells richer come wintertime, the way the world looks when covered in white.

Yesterday, we had our first snow. It didn't last, because the ground wasn't cold enough, but it will be back. But we pulled on jackets and found hats left unpacked from last year and celebrated it regardless. Here are a few photos from our first snow day. In October. Happiest of Fridays, friends.

  1. Oh, I love this! Snow is beautiful, and so fun to play in. ;) I wish it would snow where I live, but I don't think it is, at least not for awhile. It was 77 yesterday... yeah, I don't think it's going to snow. I love how you captured it in these pictures.

  3. Happy snow day my dear! We have snow on the forecast for tomorrow, which I'm a little less sure about. Maybe that comes from being a Seattlite. :) Love those boys' faces, fresh and bright from playing outside in the cold air!

  9. Lucky!! I've always loved snow, so much, and I was anticipating all the snow we would get here in Illinios last year, becuase the year before that when we lived in Indiana, it was all ice. Let's just say, we had a very warm winter, and since I'll be spending half my winter in Wisconsin, I'm really hoping that changes.
And oh, were these just gorgeous. You did such a wonderful job catching the beauty of the first snow. Those ones of Sam were just adorable.

  14. Hannah, this is so sweet! That's about the amount of snow we get, total, most years so I can still relate to the kiddos sense of excitement. I remember a few snowier winters but it's a rare thing.
