simplifying ( my summer lists )

June 13, 2011

I have so many words that I want to write, so many things I want to say -- dreams and plans that are spilling out into everything. Since I have a week off of ballet, there's a slight lull in the everyday craziness -- which is odd, yet calming at the same time. So let me just begin by saying...thank you.

I'm so blessed and grateful for your prayers, sweet words, and kind comments. The performance went beautifully, and was an amazing production. My mom was the official photographer and once some photos are released to the press, I hope to share a couple shots with you. Perhaps when we receive the DVD, I'll put up one of my variations. We'll see.
[3/365] "Dance is music made visible."
But despite the beauty of the day, there's always an underlying tone of melancholy tinging the end of the performance. It's beautiful because it happened -- it's the culmination of a lifetime of moments, leading up to the one final moment where all the world seems to truly be a stage that was meant for you to dance upon. Yet at the same time, after roses sit softly in vases and the world is quiet, you know that there will never be another moment just like that. And that is why it is beautifully melancholy -- joyful yet sad all in the same second.

So I sit here and write, amidst shouts of siblings laughing outside, and I smile. Summer is here at last. And with summer comes summer lists and plans; dreams that we desperately want to be realized in these few months. But, this summer, my summer list is a bit different. I'm striving for simplicity in these few months. And these are some of the ways I'm planning on doing so...

getting rid of excess
clothing, shoes, and stuff
and keeping only what I really need

go to bed earlier
and wake up just in time
to watch the world wake up

cut out things that clutter up my life
get rid of the weeds
so that I can blossom

start each morning by
reading my bible and
praying

spend more time
with my family
working, playing,
or laughing

do the first things
first
work before play

Tidy my room
and workspace
daily

use my time
i n t e n t i o n a l l y

and...

live each day
like it's
my last
(Ephesians 5:15-17)

That's my summer list. What's yours?

Loads of love,
Hannah

ps. I started a 365 project and would love it if you'd follow along on my flickr.

  1. This is so beautiful! I used to dance but I don't think I could ever do ballet! I love your list as well. I haven't had any thoughts to my summer yet but hopefully I can think of something good and stick to it!!

  3. Hey, Hannah! :D

I'm not sure if you remember me, but I've always loved your blog. It's my absolute favorite. I've recently returned to blogging, and that makes me really happy! I've missed the wonderful people here!

I definitely agree with your list 100%. I know I have so much excess in my life, and I want to be free of that. It tends to bog me down quite a bit. I need to get rid of some weeds too, spend more time doing productive, useful things during the summer, and prioritize carefully. Structure is so important, even in the summer. It gives me such a sense of accomplishment and purpose. I want to live each and every day in a way that pleases God. :)

By the way, that picture of you is stunning! How I wish I could get my leg that straight! Oh well, I'm still working on it. ;)

  4. Wow, this is entirely gorgeous! I really love the photos...they made my heart actually do a little jete of its own!

http://dramaticelegance.blogspot.com/2011/06/dancer.html (because your passionate love of ballet and my own dancer-ish-ness inspired this one).

I love the summer list...I just may have to do one of my own here in the near future. <3

  5. Good plan! :)

Hmmm... study for CLEP test, do ballet, take advantage of my few weeks at home with siblings, teach ballet, walk the dogs, prepare Bible study for ballet intensive, survive being a counselor at a said intensive... :P Speaking of, I'd better get to it!

  6. Hannah,

You've summed up what I wanted my summer to be. But it's ended up being a big huge load of business. I've had a few times to relax, but I don't use my time wisely, as wisely as I wish I was.

Your post was a sweet reminder of what I wanted for this summer, thanks. :)

  8. I am so glad your recital went well! You were on my mind a lot this weekend, so every time I thought of you, I would just say a little prayer that it went well. =)

What a lovely summer list! I think it would do me good to write one...

    1. Spend more time reading my Bible, and growing closer to God.

    2. Take more pictures.

    3. Relax, and enjoy what God gives me, not worrying about what I don't have.

    4. Dance like no one is watching me. Dance with my heart.

    5. Spend more time with my familly.

    Love ya!

  10. Hannah~

I too love the feeling of the lights shining down, the wooden floor beneath me and knowing that this is where I belong. But I can also relate to the sadness after the show... this is where the Doctor Seuss quote "Don't cry because its over; smile because it happened." comes into play. :)

I posted a list of my summer goals on my blog here: http://lindseymarie97.blogspot.com/2011/06/this-summer.html They follow yours in the fact that they are pulling me towards a simpler life, a life where Jesus is clearly the center and the all.

    In Him,
